4. Hot-Melt Adhesives Hot-melt adhesives — typically EVA or metallocene polyolefin-based — are used for specific flexible packaging applications, including:
- Fin seals and lap seals on form-fill-seal packaging
- Reclosable packaging
- Lidding adhesion
They offer instant bonding, no cure time, and no VOC emissions, but are generally limited to lower-bond-strength applications compared to PU laminates.
Critical Performance Criteria for Malaysian Flexible Packaging
Malaysia’s tropical climate — with high temperatures and near-constant high humidity — places specific demands on flexible packaging adhesives:
Heat resistance: Malaysian packaging may be exposed to temperatures exceeding 40°C in warehouses and during transport. Adhesives must maintain full bond strength at these temperatures.
Humidity resistance: High ambient moisture can compromise poorly formulated adhesives, causing delamination or loss of clarity in clear laminates.
Food contact compliance: Malaysian food packaging must comply with both local Food Act requirements and, where exported, international standards (EU, US FDA). Adhesives used in food packaging must be formulated from approved raw materials with controlled migration levels.
